>> we'll final high here from naso because he's representing himself. marla tellez joins us with what we can expect. >> actually joseph naso's trial, today more than two years after he was first arraigned, the 79-year-old accused killer loops finally have his day in koufrmt as you mentioned, he venting hip self. the caveat is he gets help from a legal adviser. joseph naso is accused of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. two of the women were found in the bay area. one woman's body was found in fairfax in marin county, another victim discovered in contra costa county. he was a self-employed modeling photographer who lived in reno. prosecutors painted him as a sexual deviant who photographed and sexually assaulted his

victims and then strangled them. investigators say they found his dna on at least one of his victims. they also found what prosecutors call a rape journal inside his home. nonetheless, naso is pleading not guilty. his murder case is being tried in marin county and san raff real. opening statements are set to begin at 9:00 this morning. we will keep our eye on this trial. but coming up in my next report, i'll explain why authorities nationwide are going to be watching this trial very closely as well. sgr testimony continues today in the trial of two men accused of gang raping a teenage girl outside a homecoming dance in richmond. the trials of joseph montano and marcellus peters heard by separate juries. six men were charged in the 2009 rape of a 16-year-old girl who prosecutors say was drunk. two of the men have taken plea

deals. last month, a man known as the ringleader of that rape testified in court. the victim is expected to testify during this trial. two police officers in fremont on leave as the department investigates a deadly shooting. officers fired at a man when he confronted them inside a home early sunday morning. his mother called 911 saying her son was out of control and armed with a knife. the man is described as mentally ill. said he was throwing things, taking pictures off walls, throwing furniture, turning it upside down and even threw a piece of furniture out the window. >> the man died at the scene. his mother and a sibling had stab wounds but are expected to recover. this morning alameda county sheriff's office say a 30-year-old man was kayaking with a man when he fell into the water at del valle park.

a dive team was also called out. time is 5:03. meteorologist christina loren is along for us right now. sounds like a nice cool start to get the week jump-started. >> it is going to be really nice. we have so much happening out there weatherwise in the city by the bay. 5:04. you can see the sun starting to make an appearance. it won't officially be out for another 35 minutes. you can see the bay bridge in the distance. we have low visibility starting to shape up and gusty winds at the immediate coast this morning. give yourself a little extra time. we're nice and clear to start here in the south bay. i want to show you where the winds are the strongest. san francisco, sustained speed of 20 miles per hour, 21 in novato. the wind strengths will be a factor today. they will intensify as we head from 4:00 to 7:00 and drop off overnight. we're not expecting a lot of wind and as a result really thick fog for tomorrow. this morning we're getting a

break from the thick fog. in oakland, 62 at noon and 68 degrees at lunchtime in fremont. 81 on the way to gilroy, 77 in los gatos and 70 degrees today in santa cruz. ly take you through the rest of the week, help you plan that wardrobe and those outdoor plans. after all a lot of people starting to get off for summertime. let's check the drive and see if it's any lighter with mike. >> it's actually about the same because it's getting lighter. we're just approaching sunrise. that's not really the time where the peek commute hits just yet. a nice easy drive northbound 101 at 680. the map shows the entire south bay. the yellow showing up just a stein any bit below the speed limit. we're looking over here toward the area here, hillsdale at pearl is where we have a deadly crash that happened overnight. our team is headed that way -- we have that intersection

closed. the investigation continues and that is just north of capital expressway just west of 87. we'll follow that. avoid the intersection if you can. pearl and hillsdale a large intersecti intersection. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza shows the earlier backup has cleared because we do aim imagine all toll lanes are open. now delays across the upper deck after the earlier disabled vehicle. that should be a smooth drive into the city. thank you very much. 5:06. breaking news going on in san jose. investigators there trying to figure out if alcohol played a role in a deadly early morning crash. this happened at about 2:00 at hillsdale and pearl avenue. that's just west of highway 87 at capital expressway. that is where arturo santiago is on scene. this happened just a couple hours ago. how much does it look like it might affect traffic? >> reporter: it looks like it's going to have a pretty major effect on traffic. the road was shut down almost immediately after the accident happened. it happened just after 2:00 this

morning. two people inside that car, a driver and passenger. the passer juz pronounced dead at the scene. according to san jose police, the driver was trying to navigate a curve on pearl. he was going too fast and lost control and crashed at the intersection of hillsdale. the car hit and damaged five parked cars before coming to rest on the side of the street. firefighters got here and had to cut the passenger out of the car. at this point police believe alcohol may have been a factor. >> the victim was extracted out of the vehicle. officers found several cans of beer inside the vehicle. we'll check when our traffic enforcement unit gets here. they'll determine whether or not any are open containers or they're closed. we're not sure at this time. >> the passenger is a 40-year-old male. the driver is an 18-year-old male. he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. again, this happened at hillsdale and pearl. the road is expected to be closed for several hours while they conduct an investigation

into exactly how this all prepared out. we're live in san jose, arturo santiago, "today in the bay." 5:08. despite the a's rolling to a huge win, the sell-out home crowd still thinks this game stun, literally. the coliseum's old drainage system failed out there and it was oozing sewage right into the clubhouse, not one of those you want to be a part of. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live at 0 dot co coliseum. christie, does it still smell out there? anything lingering? >> reporter: fortunately i can't smell anything. quite a strong breeze by the freeway. i have to tell you quite a few tweets going out this morning saying that if this isn't proof that the a's need a brand new stadium to play in, they don't know what is. after raw sewage was reported in the clubhouse level which basically meant the oakland a's and mariners had to share a locker room, that of the oakland

raiders. "the chronicle" reports players went up and down the stairs in towels and shower shoes. the a's drew a sell-out crowd, that's good news, which could have put extra strange on the facility which was built in 1966. the a's have a lease that expires after this season. the a's have been looking for a new stadium eyeing san jose. major league baseball hasn't given a decision because of the giants territorial rights. it's been a stalemate with other issues involved. a number of a's players tweeted out about the sewage saga, like josh reddick. sean doolittle saying after i checked out the new sewage pool in our locker room, i got to see the raiders clubhouse, hash tag, commitment to excellence.

time. >> both companies have called for press conferences. mark zuckerberg wants to talk to reporters in menlo park. elon musk will hold his in los angeles. about what we're not sure. i would pay more attention to the tesla announcement. facebook's may be more about increptal improvements. even the big announcements aren't that big, at least they don't turn out to be. this one home, software from the cell phone and facebook. the timing on this is fairly gutsy because reporters will probably be more likely to talk to mark zuckerberg about nsa spying than whatever it is he'd like to announce. let's get a monday morning preview of the markets. seema mode difficult is live at cnbc headquarters. >> good morning. futures are higher as the markets come off a third down week. investors focusing in on the fed

on hopes that the central bank will calm concerns about possibly pulling back on its economic stimulus plans. we get data out on housing. be sure to watch out for that. the dow falling 106 points on friday to close at 15,070. right now futures are higher across the board. scott? >> seema, how important is that fed meet? even hungarians are watching it. hungary this morning warned if the federal open markets committee doesn't assure the world easy money will continue, hungary could fall into recession. that's how far-reaching all this is. there is huge pressure on ben bernanke to say the party is going to continue. it's not really his job, jon and laura, to prop up stocks. but wall street has been so dependent on low interest rates, you would think it was the fed's job to drive the dow higher. >> meteorologist christina loren

is back. we're all hungry for some nice weather. >> higher dow, lower temperatures, a good combination to kickoff the workweek. we have a strong wind this morning. if you drive a high-profile vehicle, tractors, trailers, suvs, you know the drill. hold on to your steering wheel because we are seeing strong gusts. your sustained speeds are anywhere between about 10 to 20 miles per hour especially at the coast. you're getting gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour from time to time. our open water bridges, bay bridge, the golden gate bridge, that's where we like that friction. higher winds as you make your way antioch. we'll see a lot of sunshine inland. we'll have to wait on it a little bit. an area of low pressure ushering in a strong onshore flow that will spin out in the pacific northwest the next couple days. for us that means the cooldown

will continue. the showers stay to the north. but the cool air funnels right into the bay area. we'll see highs cooler than average. we'll keep the cooldown going through wednesday. you don't need the ac unless you're really, really sensitive. as we head throughout the next couple days, temperatures drop off. you can really give it a break. as we head throughout wednesday looking really comfortable, 81 degrees by thursday. friday into the upcoming weekend we are going to warm you up. we're expecting the 90s, but no tripal digits. it's the last week for the last few schools in fremont. enjoy it, like christina said, enjoy it. looking the the south bay where you see yellow scattered across the bill. the yellow down to about 60 miles per hour for the most part. coming off 880 off 101, a blip right around 55. fewer cars so the averages are

much more affected by maybe larger trucks that might be getting up to speed. a smooth drive throughout most of the south bay freeways. this is where arturo was reporting live from the deadly crash, hillsdale at pearl. there are a number of auto dealerships along this stretch. also there's a montessori school right around hillsdale and pearl. we're checking the area. this will remain closed for the majority of the day from what we here. most folks will use almaden road. note between these two major roadways, highway 87 and capital expressway, that intersection is closed for the majority of the morning. let's get a look at the peninsula a very light flow of traffic. 101 north past ravens wood shopping center and towards san mateo. the san mateo approach coming off 92, let's go to the san mateo bridge from the foster city side. we'll see traffic flows nicely. cameras shook from time to time,

some gusty conditions. at times we had that between san mateo and san francisco. things have calmed down. christina gave you the warning anyway. also heading to the east bay, a smooth drive across that san mateo bridge. there is a crash reported earlier between a car and a motorcycle reportedly off the road now. no slowing from what i see. but it is still there on the shoulder. keep that in mind, castro valley y, an easy drive. things are starting to build as far as the volume goes. the eastbound slowdown, it's still just at 60 miles per hour. that's not a big deal. we wanted to let you know we're tracking that for you. we'll send it back to you guys. where mike left off on your commute, consider yourself warned this morning. it may cost you more to get exactly where you need to go. that's because muni now increasing fares for some riders. adults with a fast pass or muni only pass will pay $2.00 per month. seniors and youth riders will

pay $1.00 more every month. riders will see the increase when they buy their july passes. so beware. muni says the increase is based on inflation rates. a school teacher in southern california who lost her job after she was a victim of domestic violence has been offered a new job. carry charlesworth was let go after officials say they were concerned about her threatening behavior. her four children who were students at the school were also asked to leave. >> it's good to know that people genuinely care. >> the anonymous school official runs a private school in the los angeles area. she says as a fellow educator, offering charlesworth a job was the least she could do. the time now 5:19. the vice president stopping by a bay area graduation ceremony. we'll let you know why he made that trip coming up next.

welcome back. a live look outside from mount tam. christina loren says cooler temperatures before they start to rise at the end. mike inouye checking out your roads. it is 5:22. vice president joe biden back home in washington, d.c. this morning after a quick fund-raising trip followed by a few surprise visits in the bay area. the vice president stopping by a popular sunnyvale diner saturday. you can see him there talking with customers at hoby's. after he was there he jumped over to stanford to catch the

graduation, his niece getting the cap and gown sunday. michael bloomberg during his commenceme commencement. >> every generation of americans say it extended the rights of full citizenship to an ever-widening circle. i have every confidence that your generation will do the same. marriage equality is the civil rights issue of our time. >> bloomberg also praised stanford's historic role in the growth of the tech industry. he then encouraged students interested in entrepreneurship to move to new york city rather than stay in silicon valley. don't try to steal thechlt bloomberg joked that they would have a better dating and social life in the big apple. yesterday a total of 5,081 graduated from stanford.

well. looking toward the eastshore freeway, the headlights are westbound 80. that's your commute direction. also close do the limit. we'll show you, no problems down off the merge coming off the richmond san rafael bridge. across the bay bridge you dip in speeds a tad through the s curve. over to the san rafael side, smooth flow from 101 down toward the split and continuing towards the golden gate bridge. the only issue for drivers, maybe low visibility on the north side of the bridge. you can't see the towers here. that's on the span itself both sides reporting no delays as far as the speeds go. you might want to consider tapping the brakes a little bit. the pope over the weekend blessed thousands of harley-davidsons and their riders at the vatican. the riders gathered to celebrate the 110th anniversary for that motorcycle company. the thundering engines nearly

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning everybody. breaking news to tell you about in san jose. police there trying to figure out exactly whether alcohol played a role in an early morning crash killing a passenger. this all happened at about 2:00 at hillsdale and pearl avenue. that is just west of highway 87 at capital expressway. that is where arturo santiago is right now. he's been talking to police this morning. what are they telling you, arturo? >> reporter: the scene is still very active. you can see the main car that was involved and the parked cars it crashed into. the road here will be closed for the next few hours as the accident investigation team starts to take its measurements and also gather some evidence. the crash happened at around 2:00 this morning. the driver was trying to navigate a crash on pearl street. the passenger was trapped inside the core and that passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

mobile home park on monterey road near exactly where the body was found saturday morning. the body of a 40-year-old woman was discovered by a passerby. investigators there are looking into whether she was sexually assaulted before she was killed. shepherd expected to make his first court appearance on wednesday. it is a long time coming today for joseph naso. opening statements are expected to begin in his murder trial in marin county today in the bay's marla tellez has a preview for us. >> good morning. we've been covering the story for years. joseph naso was 77 years at the time he was arraigned. now at 79 he'll take on the task of defending himself in his own murder trial. yes, he is representing himself. this will happen in just a matter of hours as court gets under way at 9:00 this morning. he's accused of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. two of the women were found dead in the bay area, one in marin

county, the other in contra costa county. naso was a self-employed modeling photograph. prosecutors say he used his profession to take advantage of his victims. he said he drugged, photographed the women and dumped their bodies in rural areas. >> naso says his models were willing participants. his dna was found on at least one of the victims. despite this, naso is pleading not guilty. we'll follow this trial very closely. so are authorities nationwide because they're looking at naso as a suspect in more cold cases. this trial could lead for more legal problems for naso down the road. it's going to be a long journey for both sides as the whom thle thing is expected to last three months. a south bay man charged with

molesting three young girls expected to return to court. joaquin bailey arrested and charged last year with three felly counts on lewd acts on a child and one account of sexual assault on an incapable person. bailey worked as a group home for children in los gatos and as a teacher's aide at achieve kids. 5:34. pacifica police released a sketch of a man who tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl. police say the man approached the girl near the pacifica pier telling her to come with him. when the girl refused, the man tried to physically force her. here is a look at that sketch. she fought back punching him and running away. if you know who this is, call pacifica police. a pair of bills aimed at making california limb scenes safer getting their first looks in sacramento this week. a senate committee considering a bill introduced by san leandro

state senator corbett, this would require two doors and two emergency windows in the passenger section in all limousines by 2015. tomorrow a separate bill introduced by senator jerry hill would require all limb scenes to carry fire extinguishers. both of these bills are in response to two recent limousine fires earlier this month. ten women in walnut creek narrowly escaped a fire. last month, five women tragically died in a lichl scene fire on the san mateo bridge. the los gatos town council will hold a special public hearing addressing plans to change how the town deals with firearm dealers. the new ordinance would require all firearm dealers to get a permit from the town before selling firearms. it was drafted after public outrage against templar sports. the owner says he followed proper permitting procedure.

many community members are upset there was no public meeting before templar sports opened. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00 at town council headquarters. christina loren is back to give us a look and give us a look at the forecast. >> good morning to you, jon and laura. you can see a little gray sky shaping up in san mateo. we have thick low crowds. we'll check on the drive. i want to talked about where we are to start. at 50 degrees in novato. 50 degrees in zen sonoma. beautiful weather there. a lot of people like to visit wine country because the transitional period between spring time and summertime, we garvin thomas some of the best weather all year long. today that will be the case. 56 degrees in san jose. as we head through the rest of the week, coomer weather headed our way. a windchill factor that you have

to deal with at the immediate coast with winds sustained at 20 to 25 miles per hour. so that means you could get knocked around a little bit in your high-profile vehicle. take it easy out there. this is what we're expecting from the wind as we head throughout your monday. we stop the clock at about 4:00 p.m., you can see on the key where the wind will be at its strongest, between about 5:00 and 7:00. at the coast we're expecting the most frequent wind gusts and heaviest sustained speeds. keep that in mind. starting to baung. in the cash lanes just getting the start, 5:38, that's why we're starting to see the build. there is no problem for the metering lights or for fast track riders. we'll look at the san mateo bridge a little farther south. the clouds hering from both sides of the bay. you can see the peninsula hills, a smooth drive westbound with those taillights. that's your commute direction. no problems on the peninsula itself. let's look at the maps and we'll show you approaching the area. ak all activity has cleared from west 92. looking at the tri-valley as well with mild slowing building up. the worst oift now through livermore. a major lengthy road closure starts in fremont today. warren avenue between kato road and mission falls court will be closed for a whole year as crews work on the b.a.r.t. extension to san jose. lit lower the street below where the future tracks will be.

summit. the president and the entire obama family touched down in belfast early this morning. the first family will be there for two days as part of the g8 summit. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us live on capitol hill with what the president will be discussing with world leaders today. >> reporter: lots of talk about syria, laura. good morning everyone. first the president did a speech focusing on youth and peace in northern ireland. he landed early this morning with the family, the girls going along on summer vacation and the president spoke to youth in northern ireland urging them to focus on peace bringing up this old campaign slogan saying hope is contagious. now the president heads to the g8 where he and world leaders will talk about what to do about syria. the u.s. decided to arm the rebels. the president expected to urge britain and france to do the same and urge russia to back off in a one-on-one meeting with

company's customers. apple says between december of last year and may of this year, the government issued between 4,000 and 5,000 requests for customer data. the statement also says the government is not allowed direct access to the company's servers and must get a court order if it wants customer content. the requests covered both criminal investigations and national security measures most commonly from police investigating robberies or searching for missing children. you may recall on friday facebook issued some similar numbers saying in the second half of 2012 u.s. agencies issued nine to 10,000 requests for user data. safe to say the sell-out crowd at the a's grade faced quite a stink. the coliseum's old drainage system failed and it oozed sewage right into the clubhouse, not a great way to watch baseball.
